The Minister of Manacles
Daily Mail, Saturday, May 6, 2006

A Minister was ambushed by fathers' rights campaigners yesterday and handcuffed to a protester. Beverly Hughes had been looking at a toy stall at a nursery teachers’ conference when the confrontation began. Wearing a Real Fathers for Justice T-shirt,

Andrew Tindale approached the Minister and attached a pair of handcuffs to her wrist. Security guards arrived at the stall shortly afterwards and escorted the Minister and protester to a private area where they were separated.

Mr. Tindale, 37, was escorted from the G-MEX in Manchester by security guards without police being called. Miss Hughes reappeared shortly afterwards and continued with her visit, addressing around 40 nursery staff, teachers and parents at the Early Years and Primary Teaching Exhibition.

'I managed to release myself quickly and continue enjoying the exhibits before speaking about the Importance of access to early years provision for all children,' she said. Mr. Tindale, from Hartlepool, was protesting at a recent court decision about custody of his two children.

He expressed his surprise that he had been released without the police being called. 'I was prepared and expecting to be arrested because I believe in what I'm doing,' he said.

Greater Manchester Police said it had not received a complaint about the incident
